Baptism

To really know Larissa is to love her.

There is no pretending with her.  If she likes you, she really likes you. That is why I wasn't too surprised that she had invited a substitute teacher who actually came.

"There is something really special about her," the teacher said with tears in her eyes.

I agree.

"And one with style, Mom"

Congratulations, Larissa to a positive beginning.

Life saver

Yesterday Larissa told me that Ethan saved her life.

Curious, I needed details.

I had the blessing of having two kids very close in age and only one grade apart. Every other year, they have lunch and recess together

Larissa had nothing to do and no one to play with at recess.  For Larissa (and I back in the day), this is a big deal.

"Mom, he gave me a hug at school and played with me the whole time!"

This morning Larissa reminded me, "Ethan saved my life one day ago."

Confidence

I'm sure having a super intelligent brother one grade ahead of you is hard, especially when you are young for your grade and a have a reading specialist.

After three months of testing, it was confirmed through IQ testing that she is so smart!

I sent her to school with a smile and a message:

I love you!  You are smart! Take your time because you will get it right!

You should have seen her beaming.

Confidence-- her new best accessory.

Our favorite weekend

Fathers and Sons' weekend always means Mothers and Daughters' weekend.

After doing girly things like shopping, visiting friends at a yard sale, and attending our favorite babysitter's wedding shower in the morning, we took the light rail to the science museum with friends.

With no deadlines or boys to feed, we got off the train to play in downtown Tempe. Larissa wanted a "fancy restaurant", and I wanted sweet potato fries with rosemary and olive oil. :)

Raea said she wanted to pick the dessert. We passed the cup cake shop and the ice cream sandwich shop, but she told us to "just wait, you will love this!"

A couple weeks earlier, she got a "cream soda" with Grandpa that we just had to have. She successfully navigated us to a little pizza shop off Mill.

Went straight to the refrigerator. And pulled out a Jones soda.

Oh, have I sheltered this child.

"Your present plans are going to succeed."

Perfect for the 10 year old who mastered down town in one visit to get her amazing cream soda.

We left the area just in time, before the cinco de mayo celebrations got too wild.

The Tooth Fairy is a union member

We have been losing a lot of teeth around here lately... and even our first canine.

Last night one of our daughters proudly claimed she finally pulled out her tooth. Sadly, her younger sister said, "The Tooth Fairy doesn't come by if you lose your tooth after seven."

Totally amused, Grant said, "yes, the Tooth Fairy is a union member."

insert teaching monologue on unions

Our oldest leaned towards me and whispered, "I don't believe in unions that's why the Tooth Fairy can't be real."

Very early this morning my husband confided in me that he had no money. I assured him it was ok since the union has rules.

I was wrong.

Raea was frustrated this morning when she didn't have any money.

Finally I said, "I talked to the Tooth Fairy. She said she didn't have enough money last night. Either you could have had a couple quarters last night or a couple bills tonight."

Then she handed ME her tooth.

"I'll take a couple bills."

Orange You Glad

The day before Annastasia was born; there was a freeze warning.

Six hours before I delivered, Grant and I picked over 300 lemons and oranges.

When I came home, Larissa had written "I love you, Anna, and you too, Mommy" on one.

I'll never look at citrus the same.

Tall is beautiful

I never had a lot of friends, just a few really good ones.

One at a time.

There was one that stood above the rest... literally. She was a foot taller than me in fourth grade.

I was an average 4'8".

I was devastated.
My friend was always the tallest in the class. Her big height matched her big personality. She was down to earth. She was the epitome of the perfect best friend.

Unfortunately a few years ago, the world lost another angel with her premature passing.

I think about her.

And her height.

And now I have my own.

Everytime I look at my tall little girl, I smile.  I see my angel friend in her.

And I couldn't be more happier.

Larissa's Birth Story

Being married to a teacher, I decided I wanted the next baby in the summer, so I could get post-partum help during his long break. I also knew this would mean the babies would be close in age.

At this same time, Grant said I couldn't keep a secret. I was going to show him!

I got pregnant right on time. I fought through the morning sickness, and I didn't tell Grant I was pregnant.

I continued to play soccer. During one intense game, I was hit in the belly with the ball. It hurt, but I didn't notice changes in my symptoms.

A couple weeks later, Grant wanted to clean the garage with me.

"No, babe. I can't. I'm too tired."

He bugged me until I finally said, "because I'm pregnant." Unfortunately, he didn't believe me. He later was upset with my anti-climatic announcement.

Just a few hours later, I started bleeding. A lot. I had known I was pregnant for over 5 weeks, but Grant was just barely getting used to the idea.

And now I was a threatened miscarriage.

We went for an emergency ultrasound. My doctor said, " if the tech shows you the heart rate, there is a 80% chance everything will be ok. If she doesn't say anything or says I will get back to you, you have lost your baby."

We went as a family. Grant stayed outside with Ethan and Raea, and I had the ultrasound by myself. I was scared, mad, and alone for one of the biggest moments I had gone through at that point. Had I lost my baby?

And then, there it was. The flashing light. She was ok... for now.

I was miserable for the rest of the pregnancy, but there was a part of me that was always glad for my pregnancy symptoms. It meant I was still pregnant.

Around 30 weeks, I started contracting. I was placed on oral terbutaline. I hated the way it made me feel. It was like a caffeine rush, without the benefits. My heart raced and my hands would shake.

And I continued in early labor for five more weeks. Finally, we had to go to the hospital because the contractions were regular. Too late for steroids. Too early for delivery.

They decided to do an amniocentesis to check for lung maturity. The bad news came... Her lungs weren't ready.

So I was "mag-ed". Basically to stop labor and the muscle contracting of the uterus, health care professionals give you intravenous magnesium which shut off all muscles. I remember laying in my hospital bed and feeling trapped because I couldn't move. The worst experience ever!

The next morning, they sent me home because the monitor was no longer picking up my contractions. I cried knowing that I still felt them.

I returned that same night. Because I was having back labor, they still didn't see any contractions. They decided to mag me again based upon my regular complaints of pain and contractions. I cried.

They decided to check my cervix and realized I was too dilated to stop. They told me I would have to have a NICU baby. I actually gave birth on the most powerful medication healthcare has to offer to stop preterm labor.

And as soon as she came out, I sighed! I had been in labor for well over a month, and I felt so good!! The pain and pressure was gone, and I still had to deliver the placenta.

35 weeks. 5#12 oz. 19.5 inches. She stayed in the NICU overnight, and in the morning, they released her to my care. She needed no additional support.

~*~*~*~

Although I hated her pregnancy and long term early labor, I felt so good right after delivery. She was my fastest recovery. I was running a half marathon only after a couple months.

And I loved having a healthy, but small baby. I carried her everywhere.

So I have these kids

I am a mom.

It is more important than any position or title I have ever held.

I am not perfect.

My kids are not perfect.

But they encourage me to be a better person. They encourage me to slow down. They remind me we are all human.

I am a mom.

Christmas Concert Week

Just this week, Larissa has had two singing performances. She sang at Banner Children's which was broadcasted to all the rooms for the really sick kids.

She also sang at a local assisted living facility.

Raea had her first fifth grade Orchestra concert tonight.

Although I have had a youth full of vocal and orchestra training, I give any musical talent to their dad. The same guy who hides his singing and music writing ability with no formal training.

I remember when we were dating, I couldn't believe it. He had me at the first stanza.

(You can't complain about picture quality when you give your phone to your kids to take pictures.)

Last games of the season

Bittersweet.

All four kids just finished fall soccer.

We will be taking next sports season off, minus a few exceptions.

Getting in newborn mode.

Nutcracker

So while Raea and Larissa enjoyed the Nutcracker, I hung out in my pajamas.

And there was a lot of this.
